Black History Everyday
30 years of Black History Month
What a remarkable feat
Thanks to Jean Augustine
We have some larger esteem
Every February we give them the heat
About everything we are
The rhythm and beat
We get into the flow
In the many places we go
But as March comes around
Everything goes out the door
Boxes got checked
And communities met
So on to the next
Is how it seems to be set
So I’m a little upset
But I still won’t soon forget
Or let it perplex
All the goals that I set
Cause whether today
Or in middle of May
Or any other day
Imma stay the same way
Black History is Canadian History
Black History is World History
The contributions are way too numerous
To be confined to a mystery
Or any calendar date, month, statue or state
As long as the people are awake
We’ll teach them about the greats
Also the lesser known
That’s why I write them in my poems
Why I sing them in my songs
I act and I become
Among those who stand for
Peace, love, equality and justice
No one is above this
Let’s give them some substance
To substantiate
There is no reason for the hate
Jealousy and envy
Will not lead us to the way
Or get us to the day
Where we can all say
We work in unity
Inside community
We might not all agree
On every little thing
But I'm sure we can agree
It’s time to change some things
So let us start with love
And if love is all we bring
I’m excited to see what will grow
From the love we’re planting
Now……
